President Joe Biden Endorses Vice President Harris

President Joe Biden has re-nominated Vice President Harris as his running mate ahead of his 2024 presidential bid, and has expressed his full support for her bid. “I am giving Kamala my full support to be our party’s nominee this year,” Biden said on social media platform X, after Harris also announced her intention to run for president.

The historic move comes as calls for Biden to step down have grown within the Democratic Party following his poor performance in the first presidential debate with former President Donald Trump last month.

Harris is the first woman, first Black person and first Asian American person to hold the office of vice president. Now, with Biden’s endorsement, Harris is more likely to become the first female president.

Harris's childhood and upbringing

Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California in 1964.

Her parents are Indian cancer researcher Shyamala Gopalan and Jamaican economist Donald Harris, who met while studying at the University of California, Berkeley, after immigrating to the United States. Harris has a younger sister, Maya.

According to the White House biography, Harris's parents were involved in the civil rights movement from the time she was a baby stroller, taking her to civil rights marches.

Harris's parents divorced when she was seven, and she was raised by her mother, who became her primary caregiver.

Her mother provided her with an environment where she could immerse herself in Indian and African-American cultures, helping her and her sister to embrace their multicultural backgrounds naturally. Harris immigrated to Canada with her mother and sister when she was 12, graduated from high school in Quebec, and then returned to the United States to attend Howard University, a historically black university in Washington, D.C.

Harris credits her experience growing up in a predominantly white school with preparing her for diverse cultural experiences in college.

In her memoir, Harris wrote that the "beauty" of Howard was "the belief that students could be anything simply because they were young, talented, and black, and that nothing should stand in the way of their success."

Harris, who majored in political science and economics, spent weekends protesting South Africa's apartheid on the National Mall. In 1983, he participated in a sit-in at the administration building to protest the firing of the editor of the student newspaper.

Legal career

After graduating from Howard, Harris earned her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1989. She was admitted to the California Bar in 1990 and worked as an assistant district attorney in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office in Oakland, where she specialized in child sexual abuse cases.

Harris said she chose to become a prosecutor because she wanted to change the criminal justice system from the inside, which disproportionately affects minorities. She later worked for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, where she was chief attorney in the career crimes unit, which prosecuted serial felons. She also led the San Francisco City Attorney’s Family and Children’s Division.

During the campaign, her opponents took issue with her acceptance of two previous state committee positions, which were filled by her romantic relationship with former California Assembly Speaker and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.

Despite some doubts about her fairness, Harris won the 2003 election, becoming California’s first black female and South Asian American female prosecutor. Seven years later, Harris, who was beginning her second term, was elected California’s attorney general, earning the title of “first” once again.

Harris’s experience as a district attorney has served her well in her Senate bid since she was state attorney general, but some of her policies have been controversial. During her 2020 presidential campaign, Harris was criticized for her decision as attorney general to threaten to criminally charge parents of truant students.

The policy has been implemented in some jurisdictions, resulting in parents being sent to prison. Harris has described the incarcerations as “unintended consequences,” insisting that no parent has been sent to prison during her tenure.

Harris also took a more progressive approach as a prosecutor, limiting California’s three-strikes law, which at the time allowed a third felony conviction to result in a life sentence, but Harris limited enforcement to serious violent crimes. Voters eventually overturned the law half a century after she began opposing it.

In 2010, Harris upset expectations by narrowly defeating popular Republican Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley in the California attorney general election. Harris’s record on criminal justice as attorney general was mixed. For example, she encouraged police use of body cameras but failed to enforce statewide standards for their use, and she opposed legislation that would have given the state attorney general the authority to investigate police shootings.

Harris also opposed the death penalty when she was attorney general. She did not seek the death penalty in the notable case of a police officer murder in San Francisco, a move that drew opposition from local police unions. But as attorney general, she also appealed a California court ruling declaring the death penalty unconstitutional.

Harris marriage

Harris married Doug Emhoff, a Los Angeles-based lawyer, in 2014. Emhoff welcomed two children, Ella and Cole, to Harris’ new family in a small ceremony officiated by Harris’s sister, Maya. Ella and Cole affectionately call Harris “Momala.”

Harris US Senate

In 2016, Harris ran for the Senate with the support of President Obama and Vice President Biden. She won the California general election, defeating her opponent, Rep. Loretta Sanchez.

Harris’s election was a huge boost to the Democratic Party at a time when it was struggling under President Trump. Harris became the second black woman to enter the Senate. She gained attention during her time as a senator, using her experience as a prosecutor to grill Trump administration officials.

As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Harris was a sharp critic of first Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions and later Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Harris was one of the first senators, along with Vice President Mike Pence and former Senator Claire McCaskill, to require all appellate court nominees to disclose their sex crime convictions.

Harris has also co-sponsored a number of bills, including the Equality Act, which would prohibit discrimination based on gender, race, and sexual orientation, a marijuana legalization bill, and a police reform bill. In particular, she has gained attention for working with activists demanding reform of the criminal justice system.

Her policies have taken a more progressive turn, including proposing a "smart on crime" approach to criminal justice reform.

2020 Harris presidential election

Harris announced her 2020 presidential bid in front of thousands of supporters in San Francisco on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2019. During the event, Harris criticized “President Trump’s lack of moral leadership” and pledged to create a society where all Americans have a fair chance.

Harris’s campaign began in earnest when she was a vocal critic of President Trump’s anti-immigrant policies, particularly the separation of immigrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border. She criticized the Trump administration’s health care policies and proposed a health care reform plan that would ensure that all Americans have access to health insurance.

Harris also promised to end sexual violence against women and children and strengthen gun control. But while her presidential campaign enjoyed an early surge in popularity, her popularity has stagnated over time, even as her name recognition has grown.

Harris eventually dropped out of the Democratic primary in December 2019 due to lack of funds and low support. After dropping out, Harris decided to support former Vice President Joe Biden, who was nominated as the Democratic nominee for president. Biden chose Harris as his running mate, which played a crucial role in her becoming the first black female vice presidential candidate in the United States.

In November 2020, Harris was elected as the first female Vice President, the first Black Vice President, and the first Asian-American Vice President in U.S. history, along with President Joe Biden. Her election was an inspiration to many! She was credited with breaking down barriers between gender, race, and ethnicity in American society. Vice President Harris is taking on a variety of roles as a member of the Biden administration, which faces many challenges.

To inspire future female leaders

In her inaugural speech, Harris declared, “I am the first woman, but I will not be the last,” in an attempt to inspire future female leaders. She expressed her ambition to “help every girl grow up knowing that she can be everything she wants to be.”

Harris announces 2024 presidential bid

Vice President Kamala Harris has announced her candidacy for president in 2024! She has expressed her ambition to become the first female president of the United States, based on her career and achievements. In her presidential declaration speech, she said, “We must do more to create a just and equal society. I will do everything I can to ensure that every American has equal opportunity,” and promised to open a new era.

In her presidential declaration, Harris emphasized that she would represent the voices of Americans from diverse backgrounds, including women, minorities, and immigrants, and that she would do her best to create a society where all Americans are respected and have equal opportunities. Her presidential bid will remain another historic moment in American political history.

Kamala Harris's nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate after President Joe Biden's resignation, making her the first female president in American history, has significant political, social, and international significance. Let's analyze her chances of becoming president, the impact she will have on the world if she becomes president, and the potential contributions she will make to women's rights.

Kamala Harris's chances of becoming US President

  1. Biden's full support and career succession
President Joe Biden expressed his support for Harris by choosing her as his running mate. Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, President Biden has designated Harris as a successor who can continue his policy direction and achievements. Biden's support plays an important role in strengthening Harris' political position and unifying her support base within the Democratic Party.

  1. Current political climate
The competition between the Democratic and Republican parties in American politics is becoming fiercer by the day. Harris has achieved many historical 'firsts'. This symbolizes the diversity and inclusiveness of the Democratic Party. This background can be a great help in securing progressive supporters. In particular, she has the potential to solidify the support base among young voters, women, and minorities.
  1. Policy and Vision
Kamala Harris has established herself as a leading figure in the Biden administration’s key policies. She has a strong voice on a variety of issues, including climate change, economic inequality, and criminal justice reform. She has been pursuing policies that emphasize social justice and equality, which could be a big draw for voters who value progressive values.
  1. The Republican Competition
Harris’s chances of becoming president will depend on who the Republican nominee is. Former President Donald Trump could run again, but within the GOP, people like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence are being mentioned. Harris will likely emphasize her own uniqueness by taking a stand that contrasts with the conservative policies of the Republican Party.
  1. Polls
Recent polls have Harris either narrowly ahead or behind Trump and DeSantis in a hypothetical matchup in several states. Harris will be hoping to boost those numbers further through her campaign, especially in key battleground states, where her performance will be a key factor in determining her chances of winning.
  1. Obstacles and Challenges
Some of the major challenges Harris will face in the presidential race include:
  • Lack of political experience : While Harris has experience as vice president, she could be criticized for her lack of direct experience in the presidency, especially in areas such as foreign policy and national security.
  • Policy Achievements and Criticism : Harris has had many policy achievements as Attorney General and Senator, but she has also faced a lot of criticism. For example, her criminal justice reform policies have been criticized by some conservatives and law enforcement. Harris’s response to these criticisms will affect her approval ratings.
  • Competition within the party : Competition within the Democratic Party could also be a challenge for her, especially as she will need to come up with a strategy to win over the support of progressives like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Kamala Harris has a 45-55% chance of winning the 2024 presidential election. This will largely depend on the Republican presidential candidate, campaign strategy, economic and social conditions, and the performance of the Biden administration.

But the Democratic Party's strong base of support, Harris's personal credentials and her image as a symbol of change will all contribute to her chances of victory.
